So where does one begin to give good advice to senior citizens who are seeking a positive  educational experience that will remain with them the rest of their lives? Note that I emphasis “positive” as every good travel program will emphasis highlights that will attract attention.  Most programs will mention portions of a program that most seniors will enjoy.  Good food being one.

I can well recall the many copious meals that the Food and Wine in France Elderhostel (Exploritas) program provided.  Country inns with plenty of traditional dishes and of course good wine to accompany main meals.  You will discover nearly 8,000 educational tours in all 50 states and more than 90 countries with Exploritas.  It has been not-for-profit leader in educational travel since 1975.  Alongside local and renowned experts, experience in-depth and behind-the-scenes learning opportunities, from cultural tours and study cruises to walking, biking and more.

Programs in the US and Canada:

Looking for an experience in a particular state or province?  You may choose from a long list of the most popular programs in a particular state and in Canada a province.  Exploritas programs offer educational experiences in all their infinite varieties, answering the what’s, the why’s and the how-to’s.  Most are one week in length.  The organization awards $300,000 in scholarships annually for those who do not have the financial means to participate so don’t count yourself out of any program.  “When I compare what I get for my money, it’s no contest!” comments Nancy W. from Santa Barbara, California.  Except for the occasional meal on some programs, Exploritas programs are all-inclusive. That means there are no extra “options,” no passing the hat around for tips and no surprises. From gratuities to field trips to accommodations – the price you pay up front is the price you pay.  You may leave your wallet at home.  It is “all inclusive” and anyone who has traveled on this type of program can appreciate this special feature.

The programs available in the US and Canada Participants represent a unique community of adults united under a commitment to lifelong learning.   You will make many friends.  You are invited to consult a list of their  most popular US & Canadian educational journeys and see which programs your likeminded peers are already enjoying at the above website.   I have selected for you as an example a program called Color Country National Parks: Zion, Bryce and Grand Canyon North Rim (Program # 11573RJ).  Prices for this 7-night program start at $1285 per person.  21 meals: 7 breakfasts, 7 lunches and 7 dinners are all included along with an itinerary that includes Las Vegas.  This particular program has Equipment Requirements suggesting well broken-in walking shoes or hiking boots with a good tread.  Accomodations include Microtel Inn and Suites, Majestic View Lodge, Ruby’s Inn and the North Rim Cabins and Lodge.  There are so many options and variety of things to do in Las Vegas that they could not all be listed here. Program specifics are listed in great detail for each of the hundreds of choices.  The United States has 3.5 million square miles of urban achievement, parkland, historic sites and natural wonders.  From the Bayou to the Badlands; Portland, Ore., to Portland, Maine; Exploritas programs occur in all 50 states to promote understanding of the peoples, places and past of this vast nation.  Why not choose to explore with one of the hundreds of choices?

In my next blog, I will focus on international programs that are most often two weeks in length.
