Travel Deals for Senior Citizens

Jan 20th, 2010 | By | Category: Senior Travel

USA TODAY has a section on Travel and it is full of good information for seniors seeking help in planning their next trip. In particular I like their Destinations links. At the top of the page, simply click on this spot. It provides City Guides and 10 Great Places To ….fill in the blank… . Lastly it has Deals, lots of them for your consideration.

While you can always buy a copy of the newspaper for one dollar, the Internet provides easy access and if full of helpful information. Included on the Deals site is Sherman’s Top 25. This continually changes so you will have to keep up with the “deals” on a regular basis. Actually Shermans Travel is a new site for me; I found it on USA Today. Their logo reads “Best Deals, Expert Advice” and it all looks good to me. On this site as well you will find Travel Deals, Destination Guides, Trip Ideas, Blogs and more. It is a loaded site.

Shermans Daily Deals announces that Delta Airlines has launched a winter fare sale to nearly every destination in its route network. This includes flights within the U.S., Europe, and more. Fares are priced from $49 each way for short-haul flights, $99 for coast-to-coast departures, and just $259 to Europe. Travel is valid through March 11 for domestic jaunts, or through March 18 for international flights. Tickets must be booked by January 21, and a 14-day advance purchase is required. Some blackout dates apply. Why do they always have to give the price that looks so good until you read: Each-way Sale Fare* based on round-trip purchase? Wouldn’t it just be more direct and easier to give the full round-trip price up front? Their Today in the Sky Blog keeps seniors up to date on what is happening in the airline industry. For instance they recently wrote that “The Wall Street Journal, citing newspapers in Europe and Asia, is reporting that Japanese Airlines and Delta Air Lines have struck a deal.”

On the Airlines link you may access news for any airline and major US airports, including a Google Map and other pertinent information for travelers. It is a rich site. I like “rich sites.” Terminal and Gate Maps are part of this link and can be very helpful for those of us who have not been to a particular airport. The Flight Tracker is very useful for tracking friends who are coming in a particular airline and flight number. You can determine the ETA (estimated time of arrival) and be there on time to pick up the passenger(s). You may Shop for Flights on this same page.

I wanted to know how well it worked so I booked a flight from Phoenix to Charles DeGaulle (Paris). The cheapest flight was on BA (British Airways) for $826. It also listed several other airlines and gave the prices. The BA flight was highlighted as the best price. There is a Travel Video section on the main site. I loved watching the Boeing 787 initial flight. What a “beautiful big bird she is.” I could on and on but you can just as easily go on and on yourself on this great site. Enjoy. jeb
