Smart Travel for Seniors: More Suggestions

Sep 15th, 2010 | By James E Becker | Category: Senior Travel

Today’s post is a potpurri of information about travel.  I find tidbits like these helpful to review occasionally:

  • Travel can be one of life’s great pleasures after retirement, whether you’re a baby boomer or an older senior. Here’s where to look for information on travel for older adults, including whether you’re going alone or with a group, taking a well worn path or the road less travelled. But knowing how to travel safely, affordably and efficiently is just as important as deciding where you want to go.
  • In a previous blog I addressed Accessible Travel for People with Disabilities.  Here is another site regarding accessible travel that I find helpful.  It contains information and advice on accessible travel from an accessible travel expert, plus other useful information for people with disabilities.
  • In a 10-year study of people aged 70+, Australian researchers concluded that having a network of good friends increases longevity in seniors. The surprise is that friendship has a greater effect on longevity than close family relationships. Most of us know from experience that having good friends can make our lives richer, but research now shows that our friends may also increase our longevity. The same isn’t true for our relatives.
  • Are you or your spouse owners of a motorcyle? A growing number of baby boomers and seniors are taking to the open road on motorcycles these days, and the evidence is showing up in emergency rooms. In a study of more than 61,000 motorcyclists between the ages of 17 and 89, researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center found that road warriors age 40 and older were nearly twice as likely to die from injuries received in a motorcycle accident than younger riders. The fastest growing age group of injured riders were those between 50 and 59.
  • Everyone likes to get travel discounts and travel bargains, and travel discounts are common for baby boomers and seniors. Learn how to get the best travel discounts and where to find bargain travel.
  • There’s never been a better time to take up the RV life. Whether you’re a senior weekend wanderer, a senior snowbird or an senior RV full-timer, there’s an RV to suit any travel budget and taste. With baby boomers reaching retirement age, more and more people are taking to the road with their motor homes, RVs or travel trailers. The Recreation Vehicle Industry Association recently reported that nearly 8 million American households have an RV, motor home or travel trailer and that there are as many as 30 million RV enthusiasts in the U.S.  Have you ever considered traveling by RV in Europe.  More and more seniors are doing just that.  jeb
