Seniors Visit the Wisconsin Dells

May 2nd, 2011 | By James E Becker | Category: Senior Travel

Ever heard of the “Dells”?  My wife and I honeymooned at the Dells. Wisconsin Dells is Wisconsin’s biggest tourist attraction because of its mixture of nature and tourist traps. With bluffs, Lake Delton and a number of campgrounds, this is an ideal vacation spot for senior outdoor lovers. One of the oldest sites to appear on maps of the western Great Lakes region is the “Dalles” of the Wisconsin River. It was identified as a convenient reference point by French explorers in the 1700′s. The name stuck after the French explorers left Wisconsin, with the spelling and pronunciation Anglicized as the “dells”.

Wisconsin Dells is a city in south-central Wisconsin with a population of 2,418 as of the 2000 census.  The city takes its name from the dells of the Wisconsin River, a scenic gorge that features striking sandstone formations along the banks of the Wisconsin River. Together with nearby Lake Delton, the city forms an area known as “the Dells”, a popular Midwestern destination. The Dells area has an estimated five million annual visitors. Some call it the Waterpark Capital of the World with lots of water .  In Mid April there is the Dells Riverfest and the Wisconsin Dells river festival — a day of fun and excitement for the entire family. Throughout summer, lots of outdoor activities awaits in the Dells. You can spend time under the sun and get a tan, surf and get a splash in wave pools, or enjoy the water slides as well as water rides. Dads can also enjoy playing a round of golf on one of the beautiful Wisconsin Dells golf courses.

Now over 150 years old in the Dells and they are not afraid to shout it from the rooftops. That’s right, Wisconsin Dells has been a tourism town for over a century-and-a-half. Which naturally means there are lots of classic attractions and experiences to be had when you’re in town, including quaint hotels, scenic tours and Dells’ rituals.

Generally recognized for its various water parks, Wisconsin Dells has without a doubt a lot to offer for a family, couples and friends on holiday.  Aside from the amazing outdoor and indoor water parks, it’s full of top level resorts hotels, golf courses, campgrounds and fun activities. It’s actually not surprising that it has quickly become one of the top vacation destinations in America.

The water park is not the only attraction.  There are plenty of other things to see including tours, helicopter rides, galleries and more.   In 1946 a Milwaukee native named Mel Flath brought the first DUKW to the Wisconsin Dells. It was an impulse buy that he had made at a government auction in California; the trip’s purpose had been to purchase war surplus trucks. Mel opened the “Dells Amphibian Line”, which gave 90-minute tours in the Wisconsin River, exposing tourists to the area’s famous sandstone formations. Mel eventually sold his duck fleet to the Associated Boat lines in 1952, which renamed themselves the Wisconsin Ducks, Inc. Lake Delton, Wisconsin Dells’ sister city to the south, gradually became popular as the Dells attractions spread out.

And of course there are the Jet Boat rides that take you up the Wisconsin River. Despite the fact that Wisconsin Dells is a small town, it provides the feel of a big city. Wisconsin Dells is a great one of a kind experience and place to travel year around with almost 20 outdoor waterparks and 20 indoor waterpark resorts for mid-winter family vacations. Check out some fun things to do in the Wisconsin dells, including hotel reviews and favorite attractions.  There are many tour companies that can help you fulfill your dreams in the Dells. This map will take you there. jeb
