SENIORS VISIT CONEY ISLAND

Coney Island, a Destination for Seniors

Seems like everyone has heard of Coney Island but few know much more about what is there and why it is so famous.  So seniors, take in a Nathan hot-dog and enjoy the fun. Coney Island is a New York City neighborhood that features an amusement area that includes 50 or more separate rides and attractions.

It’s not a centrally managed amusement park like Disneyland or Six Flags, as a result, specific questions about rides, filming privileges, etc., should be directed to individual businesses. Coney Island USA, a not for profit arts organization, runs the Mermaid Parade, the Sideshow and the Coney Island Museum, among other programs.  The new Luna Park at Coney Island, opened May 29, 2010 and features 19 brand new rides.  Paying tribute to Coney Island’s spectacular past, Luna Park was developed and will be operated by Central Amusement International.  Luna Park is where you will want to be, at least for starters.

When I did a search for Coney Island I discovered that there are a plethora of Coneys around the country…but only one Coney Island in NYC. Their logo reads The One an Only Coney.  You need to know that there is no lodging in Coney Island however there are a few hotels in Sheepshead Bay, a short cab ride away. Some still refer to the area as a shadow of its original self.

Seniors, Coney Island Peaked When We Were Kids

The so called island is a peninsula and beach on the Atlantic in southern Brooklyn. The site was formerly an island, but became partially connected to the mainland by landfill. Coney Island is possibly best known as the site of amusement parks and a major resort that reached their peak during the first half of the 20th century.

The Boardwalk is famous and, of course, you can munch on one of Nathan’s famous hot dogs, take the Cyclone roller coaster, check out Astroland and the Wonder Wheel. Do check out this Fun Guide to help you orient yourself as this site is large and can be confusing. If you have a tendency for dizziness, maybe you might just want to walk around and enjoy the scenery.  jeb
