Senior Tourists: Holiday Travel Sites

Nov 28th, 2010 | By James E Becker | Category: Senior Travel

I’m sharing some of my favorite senior citizen travel sites with you today.  My list of favorites is very long, and these are just the ones that came to mind today.  Travel sites are extremely popular, especially among seniors and especially for holiday travel, because you can do all your travel planning online; that includes flights, hotels, auto rentals and tours for every travel destination on the planet.

TripAdvisor.com is now ten years old and draws five million visitors a day.  The site claims an average of 21 comments and photos per minute in 19 languages.  It’s easy to see why this site is so popular and is visited so frequently.  There are more than 40 million reviews and opinions about travel, most of them directed at 450,000 lodgings worldwide, and its travel forums are so popular that 98% of posted topics receive replies within 24 hours. I think this is a good site to consult when seniors are planning worldwide travel.

And now Google, the world’s most popular search engine, is expanding its reach in the lucrative online travel business. In March, Google added hotel links to its Maps application, listing hotels with room rates available to some users.  Word has it on the Internet that Google is looking to pay $1 billion to acquire ITA Software, which develops fare-shopping software for online travel agencies, airlines and fare-search-only sites, such as Bing Travel and Kayak.  Incorporating fares into Google search results would keep customers more engaged in its applications while they plan for travel, meaning they won’t need to go to other sites to get a flight or room or rent a car.  It’s a way to stay very competitive in the Internet World.  Users would be able to type in their destination and travel dates, and see flights and prices without being sent to Orbitz or Expedia or Hotwire.

Breaking Travel News (BTN) is the leading online resource centre for travel industry executives. From market intelligence and trend analysis to breaking news and exclusive video interviews, it provides all the information you need to keep your fingers on the travel pulse. It ranks as one of the leading B2B travel sites, attracting over 20,000 industry executives daily. BTN’s readership includes senior thought-leaders in travel, tour operators, travel agents, airline reservation agencies, incentive houses, events and meetings organisers, as well as the very consumers that keep the wheels of our industry in constant motion. There are over 26,000 registered members who receive a daily BTN newsletter.

CNN is in the mix with the latest travel news as well.     Then there are sites that specialize in travel information by continent and country.  AsiaTravelTips, for example, has the latest on Asia Travel News and ChinaHighlights.com  focuses on China.

My “travel hero” Peter Greenberg keeps up with the latest on his site called “Worldwide Travel News and Tips.”  Peter is always on top of the latest goings on in the travel world and his site is always good reading.  And of course you know of my interest aways in the TOP TEN of anything dealing with senior travel.  Well, here it is for World Travel Rankings in tourism and hospitality industry and TOP 10′s rankings, best and worst destinations and more tourism and travel rankings. And of course we have to toss in the TSA Latest News as they are certainly in the news daily.  Yahoo has its own headlines as does USA Today and the weird sounding one called “feedzilla.com“.   That should get you up to date for a few days anyway.  Happy Holiday Travels!     jeb
