It’s time to discover Mazatlán, seniors.  If you’ve never been to Mazatlán, you are missing one of Mexico’s true gems.  Located on the Pacific Coast at the foot of the Sierra Madre Mountains, Mazatlán is Mexico’s second largest coastal city with nearly 600K citizens. Mazatlán, meaning “land of the deer” in the ancient Nahuatl language, offers miles and miles of inviting sandy beaches.  It’s no wonder the city plays host to more than one million visitors per year.  Here seniors enjoy an authentic mix of culture and history within a modern destination.

The city’s two main areas include the revitalized Old Mazatlán historic district and the Zona Dorada (Golden Zone), which is the main shopping, dining and entertainment corridor.

Mazatlán is often referred to as the “Pearl of the Pacific” having been settled by the Spanish in 1531, making it one of the oldest ports in all the Americas.  The gold and silver mines of Rosario, Copola and Panuco found ships pouring into the harbor.  Senior sport fishermen adore the area as it is teeming with sailfish, marlin, wahoo and dorado. It is regarded as a world-class sport fishing destination.

The golden sands stretch for 16 miles along the coastline, in the Golden Zone,  where the most popular beachfronts are located and  where the water is calm for swimming and water sports.  The most famous annual event is the Carnival celebration with nearly 300K folks pouring into take part in a wide array of festivities, which include fireworks, art, floral and musical events, street parties and gastronomical fairs.  Another highly popular cultural event is called “Mazfest” which celebrates the arts with concerts, ballet, drama and photography exhibits.

You will want to see the famous Cliff Divers of El Mirador as they leap off a 45′ cliff into tide pools below.  The nearby lighthouse is the second tallest in the entire world.  Having outgrown its image as a chintzy mid-20th century resort town, today’s Mazatlán is one of Mexico’s most alluring and inviting beach destinations.  Whether you choose to be pampered in Mazatlán’s luxury hotels and resorts, visit the highly active seaport and historical attractions or enjoy hiking, bird–watching or aquatic sports, Mazatlán offers the perfect vacation for seniors.  Mazinfo will keep you very busy just figuring out what you want to see and do next.  Enjoy Maz.  jeb
