SENIOR CITIZEN TRAVEL TO DELFT

Seniors Love Delft!

Delft, Netherlands was an inspiration to the Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer.  One of Vermeer’s most famous paintings is called “View of Delft”, depicting his home town. You don’t have to look far to know why he found the city so influential to his career during the 1600s. It was also home to Anthony van Leeuwenhoek, inventor of the microscope.  Delft abounds in canals, slender houses and quaint storefronts.  Today however the city has grown and 100,000 people call Delft home.  In the past both Amsterdam and the Hague seemed to attract more seniors however the blue and white Royal Delft porcelain factory, bicycle paths, old Gothic churches and the calm life in the city are bringing their share of  senior tourists to Delft.

The city center retains a large number of monumental buildings, whereas in many streets there are canals of which the borders are connected by typical bridges, altogether making this city a notable senior tourist destination. Do watch out for bikes, they are everywhere. A bike trip through the city is a great means to  explore on your own.

Tulip Time… a Senior Favorite

Tulip time at Keukenhof will blow you away with the myriad of colors and millions of  bulbs that are shipped all over the world to growers.  To best take in Delft it is suggested that  you just try “ambling.”  You will want to “amble by” the towering brick cathedral in the old city center called Oude Kerk (Old Church), where Vermeer was buried in1675.

Delft is in the province of South Holland (Zuid-Holland), the Netherlands. It is located between Rotterdam and The Hague. Delft is primarily known for its typically Dutch town center. It is a beguiling center, a pastel-shaded medley of red-tiled houses set beside tree-lined canals interrupted by an array of attractive bridges. With justification, it is one of the most visited spots in the Netherlands. Many seniors come to Delft for the day, and in the evening, even in the summer, the town can be surprisingly – and mercifully – quiet.

TripAdvisor takes you to Delft and recommends hotels, B&Bs, the best restaurants and much more. The Delft Travel Directory also provides significant tourist information.  Have fun picking up a few good Holland souvenirs and do pick some tulips.  jeb
