For Senior Travelers: CNN, Budget Travel and AARP are here to help you…

Jan 1st, 2010 | By James E Becker | Category: Senior Travel

CNN Travel has a very nice TRAVEL page dedicated to helping make any trip more special.  They have a link called 10 travel resolutions for 2010 that feature:

  1. Get a passport, already!
  2. Relax. Seriously
  3. Learn 10 phrases
  4. Travel with a close friend or family member
  5. Give yourself the upgrade, for once
  6. Take better photos
  7. Dig in to a local delicacy
  8. Upgrade your travel gear
  9. Strike up a conversation and
  10. Don’t overthink it.

Each is further explained with additional some additional links.  As a former language teacher, I really like the one on learning some phrases for travel in another country.  Traveling without a clue about the local language puts you on the defensive.  A few simple phrases can ease the awkwardness and earn you a smile — and, yes, sometimes a laugh or a raised eyebrow. Who cares? Get a pocket-size phrase book or a smart phone application for a quick tutorial. By the time you arrive, you’ll have an “excuse me” ready for the crowds at baggage claim and a “thank-you” for the bus driver.

Budget Travel has a listing of the Top Budget Travel Destinations for 2010. One of these is in the Dominican Republic called SAMANÁ PENINSULA. Why here? When the final 2009 numbers are tallied, the D.R. may overtake Jamaica as the Caribbean island country most visited by Americans.  I concur.  I have traveled to the Punta Cana region a few times on vacation and this area is beautiful and full of top notch resorts.  The airport there is really neat with a thatched roof, musicians playing, transportation buses and taxis everywhere and it is all very clean and modern.  The resort area of Punta Cana, a busy strand of beaches on the island’s eastern coast, has long been a prime draw for U.S. travelers, but the Samaná Peninsula is a gorgeous—and considerably cheaper—alternative.  I have written previously about Apple Vacations and the Iberostar hotels at Punta Cana.  First class and a wonderful vacation.
