Thumbing through a variety of materials over the weekend, I came across this lighthearted story from the pen of Leslie Weatherhead. It is a story that may prove useful to share with your grandchildren, as they go about the task of growing up.

“At school,” he says, “I sat next to a boy whom I envied with all my soul. He was so very lucky. His father was so very kind, and my father was apparently so hard and unjust. The boy lived in the country. If it was a lovely day, he would be allowed to go haymaking, instead of coming to school. He could go fishing or do what he liked. And when examinations came, he just stayed away again. My cruel, unjust and heartless father demanded that I should not only go to school every day, but even when examinations were on.

JUST FOR SUNDAY: 12/11/2011

It was pure serendipity. Lunch was finished and our party was making its way toward the door. Suddenly I was struck by an animated toddler holding court at his table. All eyes were on him. Their affection and his joy were obvious.

I stopped to share in it. Upon getting the attention of the young man, he greeted me with a cherry “Hi, Grampa!”

I was transported. He had done only what few can do in seizing the moment to make it his. We chatted briefly. The table of family were obviously pleased with his performance and I was thrilled. They were having lunch without his older siblings, and he was the delightful center of all their attention. It was easy to see why. And then, it was time to go.

Seniors: Sending Our Granddaugther On Her Way

She went about her packing methodically and comfortably. So many trips had provided her with the skill to know how to get as much as possible and more into her bag. Her nanny had taught her how to be an efficient packer. She was packing all the clothes, the stuff, the souvenirs of a two week stay. But she was packing more than that too. She was packing our love, a bag full of memories that we would talk about for years to come. She was squeezing in all the moments, conversations, joys, pleasures we had shared in those two weeks.

But now, it was time to go home to resume her routine life with parents and friends. We will see her again, hopefully soon and often, but never again, at this midpoint in her adolescent adventure of growing up, with so much spontaneity and delicious pleasure. The treasures of this time will be stored in our hearts forever.

The Complete Grandchild

Since we are in Father’s Day Month, it seems timely to address the value, the wonder, the sneaky ways grandchildren have at capturing your hearts. They are much like cats. If you have read the book, “The Silent Meow,” you will know what I mean. They slip surreptitiously into your heart. They know how to manifest and express love in ways that catch you off guard. They are ever and forever there in front of you with that mystic smile, those endearing words, those enchanting manners.

Affection which comes by way of grandchildren, however identified, is a gift without price. It catches you in moments you don’t expect. Our youngest comes by way of a second marriage, thus she isn’t biological, but she is a miracle of love, kindness, sensitivity, warmth, happy snuggles and

The Greatest Thing in the World for Seniors

It is past our bedtime, which comes quite early. We are two hours behind our normal schedule. Our permanent residence is in the Central Time Zone, while our part time domicile is in the Mountain Time Zone. The phone rings. It is our granddaughter. “Oh, I’m sorry I woke you. You are Sun people.” That last part is correct. But to be awakened by our granddaughter is like having the sun come out and shine right over and around us. She is so (the words are typical for grandparents, but the grandchild is anything but typical) magnificent, wonderful, superb, loving, thoughtful, bright and a delicious part of our lives.

The greatest thing in the world is to have the phone ring and to have it be one of our grandchildren. The greatest thing in the world is to be showered with the attention, even if briefly, by our grandchildren. The greatest thing in the world is to be invited to be in their audience, to hear what is happening in their lives, to repond to a request to attend a concert, in which they/she will be playing,. The greatest thing in the world is to be asked to borrow a hat she will need in some upcoming school production., that we will also attend. That’s the greatest thing in the world.
