Social Security… some just don’t get it!

Oct 4th, 2010 | By Sharon Shaw Elrod MSW EdD | Category: Senior Moments Blog

There were several posts with links to news articles over the past few days on my Facebook page that caught my attention.  They were all about Social Security being eliminated, or at the least, privatized.  (My friends post this stuff on my page because they know I’m going to have a response!)  Well, here it is folks…

Social Security is not socialism.  Socialism is an economic and political theory advocating public or common ownership and cooperative management of the means of production and allocation of resources (Wikipedia).  You and I learned about this in 8th grade, for heavens sake.  You can’t take a concept out of context and expect it to make any sense.  So for all you political candidates who want to destroy Social Security because it’s socialism, go back to 8th grade; you flunked.

Social Security is not going broke.  Let me say that one more time, Social Security is NOT going broke.  SCJ has published several articles about this, citing references and documenting figures over the past several weeks.  Here’s oneAnd here’s anotherAnd here’s a third.  If political candidates are going to tell me we have to dump Social Security because it’s going broke, I want to see your figures, and I want to see the documentation based on reliable sources, not the opinions of opportunists who are willing to seek votes based on telling lies.

If you cannot produce facts, then please tell me it’s your opinion, your wish, your hope… don’t lie to me.

Social Security should be privatized.  Maybe.  Maybe not.  I don’t have the answer for this issue.  I know that when a portfolio goes south because the economy crumps, senior citizens get very worried about their financial future.  And they haven’t done anything other than follow the investment advice of their trusted advisor.  There are so many different perspectives about what ‘good’ investing is.  No one has the answer that works for everyone all the time.  I will be very concerned about seniors managing their own Social Security investment accounts, especially if poor investments mean their financial safety net disappears.

Okay, Facebook Friends.  I’ve answered all the questions you posed on my page over the past few days.  You can stop now!

Well, maybe one more thing… I hope political candidates who think Social Security should be given the boot realize what a hornet’s nest we seniors can create when we really get excited about something.
