Seniors: What Christmas Means This Year

Dec 22nd, 2010 | By Dr Jerry D Elrod | Category: Senior Moments Blog

Within the last two weeks we have enjoyed over a hundred callers to our home.  While many of them are now senior citizens I’ve known since childhood, they are not coming principally to see or visit us.  Most are making the 15 mile trek from our nearby town to see our honored guest.  He is my first cousin.  He underwent a nine hour surgical procedure about three weeks ago.  It was necessitated for the removal of a tumor in his mouth.  He was able to leave the hospital, tube free, in just under a week.

Sharon and I returned from our home in Arizona to be ready to care for him in our home in Texas.  He has no other close family who could or would have been able to provide the necessary care-taking.  The three of us are our family.

Among the magnificient blessings, wonders and satisfactions of this experience has been the sheer joy of having George with us.  His spirit and attitude are encouraging to anyone who spends any time with him.  Our gifts of presence to him are small, compared to his gifts to us.  He demonstrates courage, faith, affection, patience, generosity of kindness and goodness to us and to all who come to see him.

The real meaning of Christmas this year, in our house, is rediscovering the secret of Christmas.  Those who come are laden with the best gift of all.  They come sharing their compassion, concern and commitment to a dear and precious friend.  They come with prayers for his recovery.  They come with small tokens to symbolize their thoughtfulness.  They come to hear his story, to identify with his needs, to celebrate the blessings of friendship.

What Christmas means this year, at our house, is what it is meant to mean… the true meaning of Christmas:  Unapologetic love, unconditional and unlimited… love mixed with laughter and tears… love imbued with the strength of faith.. love under-girded with the power of hope.  Love, the Christmas story lived once again in our home and in our hearts.
