Seniors: Our Democracy is at Stake

Jan 10th, 2011 | By Sharon Shaw Elrod MSW EdD | Category: Senior Moments Blog

Senior Citizen Journal extends its deepest sympathy to the families of the victims of the January 8, 2011 tragedy in Tucson; we send special thoughts and prayers to Representative Gabrielle Giffords, who at posting time is still in critical condition, gravely ill following a gunshot wound through her beautiful brain.

We’ve said a lot about political rhetoric and vitriolic language over the past two and a half years.  So this will be nothing new to our faithful readers.  But perhaps it will open eyes and hearts for those who do not read us daily.

  • Disagreement does not mean there are good guys and bad guys; it simply means two people/groups disagree about something, about which they might feel strongly, but about which they MUST agree to disagree if there is no common ground to be found;
  • If I disagree with you, that does not mean I am evil; it means I disagree… there is a difference;
  • If you call me evil because I disagree, you have a problem; I do not; I have a DISAGREEMENT with you; that’s not evil;
  • Every citizen in the United States of America has the right to meet in a public place and discuss issues they are concerned about, without having to fear for their lives; safety isn’t for sale in this country, It Is A Right;
  • In addition to expecting to live without being harmed, we also have a right to expect to live without Want.  Our ancestors in the 1930s lived and died for this principal; the American Dream is based on this issue;
  • If you go on the Internet and post symbols or language that depicts me as a target in crosshairs, such as an animal to be hunted and killed, you have a problem, and it is possible your depiction contributes to angry retailatory behavior on the part of behaviorally impaired people;
  • If you do not understand the implications of what you post on the Internet, and do not understand that you are influencing behavior, you need to go back to Psychology 101.  Positive behavior produces positive behavior; negative behavior produces negative behavior.  And finally, and for the greater benefit of us all…
  • Violence has no place in a democracy.  Period.  End of discussion.
