Seniors: Inexpensive Entertainment

May 10th, 2011 | By Dr Jerry D Elrod | Category: Senior Moments Blog

What does it take to entertain you?  Do you require a night out, a fancy dining experience, a Broadway play, a full dress ball?  If so, you may want to forego this column, assuming you have the means for all of the above?

If not, and you just desire some options for ordinary distraction, consider these ideas.

Have a trio of couples join for an evening of games and refreshments.  Invite the couples to bring their favorite game and some finger food.  Consider setting up a rotation for a repeat of this low cost, lots of fun possiblity.

Create a co-op of persons who enjoy the same things.  If it is strolling through a shopping mall, go together.  Commit to a non-spending trip.  Get your exercise with a power walk, while hastily glancing at the windows.  Businesses may not be impressed, but you and your friends will be entertained.

Put together a picnic at a local park.  Have each person bring something pot luck style.  Share in the costs of drinks, paper plates, etc.  Choose a place that may have a pond with paddle boats.  Race one another on the water.  Bring a croquet set (how old fashioned).  Horse shoes are always fun.

Set up a movie night at someone’s home.  Do the popcorn thing.  Choose a movie or two everyone agrees will be suitable.  This may be the hardest task.  But, you can even make that fun.

Ideas are as numerous as you and your friends are ready to brainstorm them.  Give it a chance.  Save money.  Have fun.  Sound ridiculous.  Do it anyway.  You’re retired, and can do what you want to do now.
