Seniors: Considering Employment?

Mar 19th, 2010 | By Dr Jerry D Elrod | Category: Senior Moments Blog

How long has it been, since retirement, that you have considered searching for a job?  Some have, some do, and some even succeed.  Came across an employment application for a fast food franchise the other day.  I thought it would be relatively simple and basic.  It ended up being quite an inquiry on one’s qualities and abilities.

Given yesterday’s column, it may be useful  for retirees to consider reentering the job market.  It could be that the natural skills, talents, abilities, cultivated by retirees over the years, would be welcome in today’s job market.

Among the questions,, after the usual ones, are these:

How Would You Rate Yourself? (1-improvement needed  2 OK  3 Good 4 Top Performer)

–Energy level: Your sense of urgency, self motivation and enthusiasm

  – Communication Skills: Your ability to listen well, express ideas clearly and accept feedback.

—Hospitality: Your natural friendliness and customer service skills.

–Reliability:  Your dependability, attendance, self-discipline and dedication.

–Personal Pride: Your appearance, hygiene and achievement.

–Teamwork: Your cooperation with others and team spirit.

2.What are your personal strengths?_____________________________________________

3.What are  your weakest areas?__________________________________________________

4. What are your 5 year goals?_____________________________________________________

5. Why do you want to work here?_________________________________________________

These are the questions which would likely reveal your abilities most.  Perhaps it would be instructive just to fill it out for fun.  Share it with someone and ask them would they hire you on the basis of your responses.

The purpose here is to indicate what employers are most looking for.  Would you have them?  Could you market yourself?  Assuming  you could meet the routine expectations of employment, could you meet these?

If you are seriously looking for a job, remember to take seriously all the questions raised.  Remember the importance of neatness, penmanship, full disclosure, honesty and thoroughness.
