A Joy of Aging

Children and grandchildren may not really grasp how much we enjoy them.  As seniors age, one of the satisfactions of aging is to discover that our offspring and theirs bring us enormous pleasure and reward. Having them want to be with us, spend time in our home, enjoy the simple pleasures of everyday contact are all compliments beyond measure.  Being given permission to enter their world, to share in their experiences, to hear of their adventures, to know their joys all come as gifts unwrapped one by one.

Just knowing of all the options available to them at their age and with all they have going on, they want to be with us, to hear our stories, to share in our lives, no matter how dull or boring they may seem.  This is truly a gift beyond price.  Treasure the moment, savor the fleeting passing of time when you are together. Store away the memories.  Make every precious moment delicious and have it find its special place in your heart.

Granddaughter Arrives Today

So, she comes today.  The only thing better would be to have them all here simultaneously.  The only thing richer would be to enjoy them, their laughter, their humor, their fun together interactively.  But when you can’t have that, you settle for what you can have.  You enjoy the moment now.  You don’t wish it away by selfishly longing for more or something else.  You take what is given.  You feel the beating of your hearts together as being together becomes its own reward. This is your time.  This is your occasion to build a house of pleasures and share in the time that is so brief, but nonetheless rich.

Let each other know that this time, right now, is the most fulfilling and enjoyable of any time you could imagine.  Don’t hold back.  Whatever this moment brings will be the last for a time.  It will be like a ruby of great price.  Don’t lose it.  Don’t let it slip away.  When it has, what you will  have left will be the great and enormous fulfillment of having spent part of your time with each other.  There is no greater treasure.  There is no finer gift.  There is no richer joy.  Make it one you will forever remember.
