New Year List of Things To Do for Seniors

Jan 3rd, 2011 | By Dr Jerry D Elrod | Category: Senior Moments Blog

We have talked about New Year Resolutions for senior citizens for the past week, with a serious tone.  We’re not kidding.  If you want to make New Year Resolutions, get serious about them.  And if you just do that as a ritual, then throw them in the garbage where they belong… for ritualists.

Now, for the rest of us seniors who want to make some serious changes in our lives, here are some suggestions:

  • HABITS:  What’s that habit that has been troublesome for you most of your life?  Time to get rid of it?  YA!  Smoking?  Drinking a little too much?   Overeating?  No matter the issue, this is a chance to make a change. It’s up to you.
  • PERSONAL BEHAVIOR:  What issues do you have with family/friends?  Do you say one thing and do another?…  ”I love you but…” is the traditional trap.  Talking about what you believe and doing something else just doesn’t work.  So this is your chance to make a change… if you choose… in personal relationshps with family and close friends.
  • FAMILY RELATIONSHIP ISSUES:  These are present in EVERY family.  And if you think yours is an exception, you (or your descendants)  have a reckoning day coming.  Who in your family needs pardoning?  Who in your family needs immediate care?  Who in your family needs a helping hand, knowing there isn’t an immediate answer?  How are you willing to be present to your family for whatever they face?
  • FOREVER COMMITMENTS:  We seniors have lived more than two-thirds of our lives.  So who in your life is a person to whom you want to make a forever commitment? Someone for whom you will always be there?  Make that choice now, and let that decision be known with that person.

This is not necessarily the most extensive list of things to consider, but let’s think about it as a beginning.  And be assured we will add to it in the future.
