Pure Serendipity

It was pure serendipity.  Lunch was finished and our party was making its way toward the door.  Suddenly I was struck by an animated toddler holding court at his table.  All eyes were on him.  Their affection and his joy were obvious.

I stopped to share in it.  Upon getting the attention of the young man, he greeted me with a cherry “Hi, Grampa!”

I was transported.  He had done only what few can do in seizing the moment to make it his.  We chatted briefly.  The table of family were obviously pleased with his performance and I was thrilled.  They were having lunch without his older siblings, and he was the delightful center of all their attention.  It was easy to see why.  And then, it was time to go.

I started to leave, when he suddenly burst forth, yet again, “Bye Grampa!”

There is nothing like a grandchild, even one so identified for a brief moment, to get the endorphins poppin’!
