Activities for Seniors Staying Home

Apr 11th, 2020 | By | Category: Senior Moments Blog

Whether seniors are isolated at home now because of COVID19 or live alone and spend a lot of time with no one else around, there are activities with which we can engage that will promote good health and potential longevity. Many of us have a routine that we follow on a daily basis, and that routine may or may not follow healthy senior lifestyle guidelines.

The National Council on Aging is a treasure-trove of ideas and suggestions for healthy aging. They suggest the process of growing older includes attention to health, finances, relationships, personal growth, and community involvement. With all the time we have on our hands, now is a good time to choose to live a healthier and more productive life.

Health is Physical and Emotional

We need to consider all aspects of our lives when we look at healthy senior living. We are physical creatures; and we are also emotional and psychological. Research shows that if we neglect the non-physical aspects of our lives, we are in trouble. So the list of suggestions includes both, and here it is:

  • During this time of quarantine, put on a face mask and walk at least 30 minutes every day; hopefully we can ditch the face mask when the danger of infection ends;
  • Turn on a You Tube video (such as Silver Sneakers) and follow a daily exercise routine designed for seniors;
  • If you sit to read a book or work on your electronic device(s), get up and walk around your house for 10 minutes every hour; your lower back will thank you!
  • Try to get seven to nine hours of sleep a night;
  • Use a medication storage device that has days and times of the day separated so you remember to take your meds when prescribed;
  • Plan time to spend with friends, family or acquaintances weekly (or more if you desire). During this time of quarantine, that needs to be on the telephone or video-conferencing. If you don’t know how to use your video app, ask for help. After the quarantine is lifted, check your local Senior Citizen Agency for groups and activities they offer to keep seniors in healthy contact with others having similar interests.
  • If you enjoy activities of a specific nature, be sure to participate/join once the quarantine is lifted. This includes church and church groups, games offered at senior centers, hiking groups and any outdoor group activities, exercise program at senior centers or churches or fitness centers.. the list is probably endless and the cost is generally quite affordable.

These are just the basic suggestions. The complete list is probably endless. But if you need a nudge, this list will get you started.

In addition, other categories of healthy senior living include attention to your financial situation, learning and creativity and your legacy. These are subjects that need to be addressed in greater detail than a single article here permits. So we will do that in the future. Just know we are not leaving them out!

Aging is a gift we can all learn to appreciate. A part of that appreciation is learning how to best care for our physical bodies and our mental and emotional lives. Now is the best time in the world to do that.
