Red Wine on White Carpet… A Senior Citizen Moment!

Jan 17th, 2010 | By | Category: For Senior Women

There are a few things that fit into my ‘nightmare’ file and spilling red wine on a white carpet is one of those nightmares I’d hoped never to live.  So of course when I carried a glass of red wine into my bedroom, put the tall stemmed glass on my bedside table and settled into a good read, it never occurred to me that I had just set myself up for a nightmare experience.

And happen it did!   A pillow fell off the bed from behind me, fell onto the table and knocked over the wine glass.  I had a full glass of red wine all over the carpet around the table and up onto the wall.  I panicked and started running a tape of every possibility through my head…beginning with having to completely replace the carpet in the entire room.  At this moment,  our son-in-law called and  when he heard what had happened, his suggestion was, “…just say the dogs tipped the wine over, and go pour yourself another glass!”  I’m not sure whether I laughed or cried!

My husband went straight to the computer and found the following suggestion for removing the stain:
Step 1.. Blot the spill with paper towels or a clean cloth.
Step 2.. Combine 1 teaspoon carpet shampoo (or dish soap, like Dawn) and 1 cup hydrogen peroxide in a small bowl. Soak a clean sponge in the mixture, squeeze it halfway dry, then gently blot the stain. Continue until the stain lifts.
Step 3.. Sponge the stained area with warm water.
Step 4.. Blot dry with a clean cloth or paper towels.

Then he ran to the refrigerator, knowing there was a bottle of human grade, actually higher potency, hydrogen peroxide there.  Thanks to my sister, who uses it for health reasons and thanks also to her for only using Dawn dishwashing detergent, we had the necessary ‘tools’.  We followed the directions carefully.  I started rubbing and my husband told me I needed to ‘blot’ not rub.  I was still panicking, not believing that something so simple could possibly work.

However, we started to see the stain lift to a light pink,  then with one or two more solutions mixed and blotted, it lifted completely.  Today no one, and I truly say, no one can walk into the room and point to where the red wine was spilled on the white carpet.

And so I have asked myself if I have learned anything from this experience, because I will on occasion still drink a glass of wine in this white carpeted room.  What I did learn was that my husband’s kind response and helpful support turned a potentially difficult situation into something we can smile and even laugh about today.  And I also hope that I have the grace to respond as lovingly when it is my turn.
