A recent study by the University of California Los Angeles found that meditation can help to minimize feelings of loneliness and increase health in older people. In fact, those who participated in this study said that they felt a decreased sense of loneliness as a result of meditating, and blood tests showed that the state of their health increased.

Increased Health

As was previously stated, the study that was conducted at UCLA found that meditation did, in fact, provide health benefits; but how and what specific types of benefits?

Meditation involves the practice of deep breathing, which can provide a number of health advantages. This includes providing more oxygen to the brain and other major organs, as well as the blood stream. Oxygen is a crucial element in health and well being, and an increased amount can certainly help to pump up the immune system. Increased oxygen levels can help to ease digestive problems, strengthens and heals the lungs and improves circulation of the blood. Talk about some pretty impressive health benefits.

Increased Alertness and Decreased Fatigue

It is not uncommon to experience a decreased sense of alertness and increased fatigue as you age.

Again, thanks to the increased supply of oxygen that the deep breathing associated with meditation provides, the function of the brain is enhanced. The more oxygen the brain receives, the more alert it is. Hence, meditation can help to promote awareness and decrease fatigue.

Decreased Depression

Feelings of depression and loneliness are very common in people over the age of 50. This can be the result of realizing mortality. These feelings can also occur because of the changes that the body goes through, which can naturally bring about adverse feelings.

Whatever the cause, meditation has been linked to reducing these negative feelings and replacing them with happier, more positive emotions. The act of meditation allows the person to clear his mind of negative energy and focus on things that make him happy. Naturally, this helps to increase those positive feelings and decrease negative thoughts and feelings.

Creating a Meditation Room

If you are over the age of 50 and these benefits have sparked your curiosity, you may be thinking about getting involved in the art of meditation. In order to do so, you will want to create an environment that allows for successful meditation. A room that is serene, tranquil and peaceful and will provide the most conducive environment for meditation.

Consider painting the room a soothing color, like white, cool blue or calming green. Low lighting will help to create a calming atmosphere. Comfortable furnishings, like large pillows to sit or a comfortable mat to sit on are ideal for meditating. You may even want to include a water element, such as a wall fountain, as the sound of water can be quite soothing and can help you focus your energy in a positive way.

Improve your health and well being with meditation. Such a simple act can have a powerful impact.
