Jun 25th, 2010 | By James E Becker | Category: Senior Travel

Joining a senior travel club isn’t for everyone, but for those who want to travel in a group and don’t want to drive or worry about how to get there, the benefits are many.  With 37 million Americans 65 and older, travel groups geared to seniors are springing up everywhere. Because older people have more [...]

Senior Citizen Concern Over Gulf Oil Crisis

Jun 25th, 2010 | By Dr Jerry D Elrod | Category: Dr Jerry Elrod's Senior Moments Blog

No other subject seems to have the draw and appeal as what is happening in the Gulf of Mexico. Read the reflections of those journalists who have been there, recording and reflecting the pain of those who live there. Listen to the agony of long time residents whose livelihoods have been anchored in these waters. There is no other subject with such magnetism. There is no other compelling topic which seems to push persons to look toward the ocean to see their lives being radically changed. This collision has brought about nature’s bumping into big business. This drama, being acted out on a huge watery stage, tells a story of tragedy, pain, heartache, evolution that will eventually take its full toll on water creatures, fowl, humans with environmental consequences reaching far beyond our imaginations.

This is no one or two week phenomenon. We are well past that. It may get pushed off the front pages, but the oil will continue to push its ways toward shores and leave its mark on

To Attend or Not to Attend Reunions

Jun 24th, 2010 | By Dr Jerry D Elrod | Category: Dr Jerry Elrod's Senior Moments Blog

The season of reunions is beginning to strike at the heart of those of us who graduated 50 years ago. It was 1960. Recalling or wanting to recall those times comes with the invitation to join with classmates in a recollection of what was and a reconstruction of what has been. Do we really want to do that? Those times have been long buried, some deep enough that resurrection is not really desirable. Some were pleasant and carry with them mutual satisfaction in their recall. For many, life moved on and the tradition of participating in “remember when” carries little to no value. For others it is a high and a regeneration of a time mystically glorious.

With the invitation comes the tension “shall I or shall I not attend.” For those for whom the experience was mostly positive and satisfying, the choice will

Tax Implications for Senior Health Care Reform

Jun 23rd, 2010 | By Sharon Shaw Elrod MSW EdD | Category: Senior Finances

The good news for all, including senior citizens, is that the new health care law will reduce the national deficit by $143 billion.  That alone is highly significant and welcome news.  But what are the other tax implications for retirees who live on fixed incomes and must, by necessity, keep the family budget under control? [...]

Senior Citizens: Considering Marriage Again

Jun 23rd, 2010 | By Dr Jerry D Elrod | Category: Dr Jerry Elrod's Senior Moments Blog

Widowed or divorced, is considering marriage again a worthwhile undertaking or an adjustment beyond my desires? Marrying again is not for everyone. On the other hand, the single life, at an older age, can present major issues and difficulties.

Most second marriages are predicated on a series of experiences requiring evaluation and careful consideration. Loneliness is likely the most compelling reason for developing a relationship that may eventuate in marriage. Being alone, with all that that implies, can be a very depressing and debilitating state. Some, however, find the single life to be peaceful, rewarding, satisfying and enough. So, when the situation has been examined and evaluated and another person has been introduced which may make the dynamic more intriguing, then the whole equation changes. It is then that individual and

More Reasons to Support Health Care Reform

Jun 22nd, 2010 | By Sharon Shaw Elrod MSW EdD | Category: Social Security & Medicare

Patricia Barry writes for the monthly AARP Bulletin. She did an exemplary job last month putting together a special section on Health Care Reform. One of the sections carries information about some surprises. SCJ believes it worthy to be reprinted here, with credit and kudos to AARP Bulletin and Patricia Barry.

There are five sections in the new health care reform law that are surprising, and not being talked about much. Here they are:

Seniors: Respect Aging Parents

Jun 22nd, 2010 | By Dr Jerry D Elrod | Category: Dr Jerry Elrod's Senior Moments Blog

Knowing when to impose yourself upon the lives of your aging parents is sometimes a hard call. Health considerations, particularly mental health, are of primary importance and consideration. Imposing attention, presence, assumptions of need on aging parents can insult their independence and dignity. Dealing with parents who, in large part, are still in control of most of their faculties means allowing them to be at the center of all choices and decisions which affect their lives.

Seizing responsibility for parents, before they are ready, may be predicated on “what seems good for them,” but may also be premature and unfair to the parent. Allowing them to stay as actively involved in their life needs, choices and plans will likely enable them to manage, more handily, their own lives in
